OpenAI has had a dramatic week, between fighting with Elon Musk in the courtroom and rebutting reports that it isn’t growing as quickly as its investors might have hoped. The company is also thinking way ahead, to a possible battle with Apple, Samsung, Huawei and other device makers to create its own smartphone. Last year, OpenAI paid $6.5 billion to buy a small design consulting firm run by legendary Apple hardware chief Jony Ive. There are lots of reasons to be skeptical about whether OpenAI will ever bring a smartphone or similar device to market. And there are even more questions about whether it could succeed. This week on the Everybody’s Business podcast, Bloomberg News editor Mark Gurman, author of the Power On newsletter, joins hosts Max Chafkin and Stacey Vanek Smith to make the case for why OpenAI’s gadget efforts might work. Also this week, Bloomberg Businessweek columnist Deena Shanker has a report from a “MAHA” rally in Washington. After helping to elect President Donald Trump in 2024, activists from the Make America Healthy Again movement are showing their displeasure with the administration’s support of Roundup maker Bayer in a case now before the Supreme Court. MAHA influencers say they feel betrayed. It’s the latest sign that parts of Trump’s coalition may not stick with the Republican Party in the 2026 midterms.
